The importance of art in child development

A series of articles by our guest blogger, Janine Georgiou-Z about the importance of art and creative development in babies, toddlers and children. She will also add some ideas to do art with your toddler at home.

30 Things to do this winter

I love the lists of important stuff to do with your kids during every season. I found many kinds online and decided it would be fun to make our own! So together with Connie we compiled a fun list of activities to do this winter. Technically, the winter just begun a few days ago, so here it comes!

Guest blog: Healthline.com. Choosing the diet that is right for you

Looking for the ideal diet? There is actually no "right answer" for everyone, and dieting has to be a very personalized matter. What works for the woman next door may not work for you and this is especially true where any dieting and weight loss are the focus.

5 minutes of beauty in 5 easy steps

I needed to figure out a way to look and feel good about myself when leaving the house with a total of about 5-7 minutes of prep time! (the amount of time I could keep Aud busy in her crib with a book or stuffed animal). I think I’ve mastered it so I thought I would share with you how I do it!

Sensory fun at home! Easy, fun, great activity for a toddler.

Santino's sensorial activities have been mostly tactile these days, with a few occasional auditory, visual, and thermic. I haven't been documenting much of these other experiments, but he has learned to discriminate by size, length, weight, loudness, color, even edibility.

Yummy Mummy Cookie Exchange Party at Connie's. Pizzelle Recipe

Pizzelle

Connie organized a great event, a cookie exchange party for 10 baking-loving mums. Usually, I take a few days and bake hundreds of various cookies, which we pack nicely and give to our neighbors, relatives and friends. I kinda stick to the same recipes more or less, so I hope this party will help me with more variety without extra stress of trying (and failing) new recipes.

In addition to the cookies, we are supposed to bring 10 copies of our recipe to distribute along with the nicely packaged treats. Since the number of places were limited and not everybody who wanted to participate could join, I think it would be better to "distribute" my recipe right here, on our blog, so that all other moms, who aren't going to be there, could still take a small part.

My recipe is Pizzelle, Italian waffles with an intricate beautiful design, perfect for such a festive occasion as Christmas. You can eat them as cookies, just plain as they are, or spread Nutella or jam on one and cover with the other one, making a sort of a sweet sandwich. You probably saw them in the stores, but I'm sure if you make your own, they will taste much much better, in addition to being much more special.

Now, you do need the actual pizzelle maker to make them. I suggest, if you often bake/make your own treats for various occasions, like family gatherings of children parties, then do invest in this great little appliance. It costs around $50 new at Bed, Bath and Beyond, or I'm sure you can also find it in other stores.

The recipe itself is not very demanding in terms of the ingredients, easy to make, no mess, easy to clean up.

So, here's my Pizzelle:

3 large eggs (make sure the eggs are actually large, not the medium ones that call themselves "large")
1/2 cup - sugar
1/2 cup - vegetable oil
1 tsp - vanilla extract
1 tsp - baking powder
1 tbs of any 40% alcohol (makes the pizzelle crispy)
1 tsp - of anise seeds
2 cups - all purpose flour

Take a large bowl, break 3 eggs, add sugar and mix them up well. You can use a mixer, but there is no need, as you are not looking to make stiff peaks or anything like that. Add oil, then spices and alcohol. Take anise seeds and grind them to a fine powder in a coffee grinder or baby bullet. You would need to put more than a spoon of seeds, grind them and then save the rest in a small container for future baking.

Another option, just use Anisette instead. It will give the aroma you are looking for, and will give the crispiness to the waffles.

Add flour. Mix well with a spoon. The batter will be sticky, but that's ok. It shouldn't come out too stiff, as the waffles will be hard. The batter needs to be more on a loose side, that's why it is important to use large eggs, smaller eggs do not provide enough moisture and the batter becomes dry.

Warm up your pizzelle maker according to the manufacturer's instructions. Take 2 teaspoons, pick batter with one, so that it would cover just half of the spoon, and help yourself with the other spoon to put the batter in the middle of the pizzelle form. Then do the same for the other one. Close it tightly, and set the kitchen timer to 80 second. After the timer runs out, open, take the waffles out and put on a flat plate to cool off. Keep the teaspoons you work with in a glass of a cold water. This will help the batter slide off the spoon easier onto the iron surface.

The proper color of pizzelle is dark yellow, so if you see that waffles are coming out brown, then decrease the number of seconds on the timer to 75 or 70 seconds.

That's it. Making them 2 at a time seems like a tedious task, but the time flies, I usually take these seconds to clean up the kitchen, and by the end of the batter I am standing in the clean room.

This recipe will make about 40 waffles.

Guest blogger: Healthline.com. Choosing a Diet that is Right for You

Looking for the ideal diet? There is actually no "right answer" for everyone, and dieting has to be a very personalized matter. What works for the woman next door may not work for you and this is especially true where any dieting and weight loss are the focus.

So, let's begin to discuss a diet that is right for the "average working mom" by understanding calories. That's right; we said that dreaded word, but you need to know that calories are your friend and greatest ally in your efforts to lose weight.

How? Well, it is calories that make up the BMR or the basal metabolic rate. This is the number of calories you must eat every single day if you are to maintain your current weight, and without any activity. So, use the following formula to calculate how many calories you need every day:
655 + (4.3 x weight in lbs.) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)

Now, keep in mind that this figure is the calories you have to eat if you were to just lay in bed and eat all day. Even then you would not get all of those calories because your body uses around 10% of all calories consumed in the digestive process. Nice, right? You can knock ten percent of the calories "off the top" because your body negates them in order to use them.

Then there is the matter of exercise. When you exercise you burn "X" number of calories per hour, and will often continue to burn small amounts of calories in the hours afterward. So, do the math and figure out what your daily "workout" consumes from the BMR as well.

Now, where does that leave you? For example, if you discovered that you needed to eat around 1550 calories per day to remain your current weight, it would mean you needed to add 155 more calories to account for "thermic burn". If you then walk around three miles each day at a brisk pace it would mean that roughly 300 calories disappear too. This leaves you at around 1250 calories each day. So, you are already posed to lose weight if you remain in that area because you are coming in at a deficit.
Empty Calories versus Nutrition

Now, we need to take a new perspective on calories because you can't just eat any type of calories and still lose weight. For example, if you ate 1200 calories in potato chips, you wouldn't drop weight as easily as if you ate those same 1200 calories in fruits, vegetables, and lean meats.
This is because calories can be nutritious or they can be empty. Sugary snacks, fatty foods, and "junk foods" are all basically meaningless calories that provide you with poor sources of energy. Healthy foods are the way to go and will charge you up with vitamins and minerals while giving the caloric content you need.

Now we can begin to contemplate a diet that works for you on a personal level. For instance, you can look at the rather radical plans like Atkins or South Beach and remain very healthy because these reduce carbohydrates and emphasize whole foods such as vegetables and proteins. That may not work for you because you like your pasta and bread. This would mean that you could turn to a more relaxed approach to dieting and use an online plan or other program.

Keep in mind that your dieting and exercising plans have to work with your schedule, your energy needs, and your desire to make your daily eating plan something that "syncs" well with that of your family.

Staging for Play-Dating

Aud and I are avid play-daters and have been since she was about 3 months old. We thoroughly enjoy meeting up with mummy and baby friends and making an afternoon of it. As I have mentioned in past posts I have a really amazing circle of mums and babes, most of which have gone back to work, but a couple who are still at home.  I live a little out of the way for a lot of them but have come up with creative ways of hosting like meeting up at the park for a picnic, or stroller walks and splash pads in the summer, mall walks in the cooler days. There are times I have hosted at my place and as I was getting ready for our play-date I couldn’t help but giggle to myself about how I ‘stage’ my home for company.

I’m not saying I don’t enjoy a clean house, or that my place is a dirty, frazzled mess all the time. I actually thoroughly enjoy cleaning and organizing but since becoming a mum finding time to do a full out clean or even the daily dusting is few and far between.

So here I go, picking up toys, dusting every shelf, shining the mirrors, scrubbing the bathroom and then it dawned on me. Does my mum friend really believe this is what my place looks like everyday? Am I really fooling her to believe I make our bed every day? That my kitchen looks this immaculate? Not to mention the fresh baked cookies and pumpkin spice candle for smell. If only I was a real estate agent staging homes for a living, I think I would do pretty well.

How funny is that?  Her and I have actually had a good laugh about it before. How we try our best to impress other mums, giving off this façade of a women who keeps it all together, who’s floors are spotless and shelves are dustless. Personally I have never walked into a fellow mum’s home and thought OMG? Why hasn’t she folded the toilet paper ends in her bathroom? Or I see a spot on her mirror, doesn’t she clean? Puh-lease.

Ready for the truth? I definitely do not make my bed everyday, actually our room usually looks like a clothing bomb went off. I have this bad habit of getting out clothes, changing a million times and never putting them back. Then finally at the end of the week when I can no longer see my dresser I decide to go through it all and put it away.

I do have a habit of vacuuming a couple times a week but only because Audrina will find the smallest of smallest fluff or crumbs and eat it, (ok-do babies have x-ray vision or something?) Aud has also figured out that if she keeps her bottle tilted upside down she can paint a beautiful of milk drops and smears all over the floors…try keeping up with that 45 times a day.

Fresh baked cookies? Ok I might of gone to Tim Horton’s and bought a half dozen of cookies to put out…although I really do bake a mean batch of uh-mazing CCC’s, but who has the time? Let me know if you want my recipe…one tip melt the butter.

So why do I do it? Why do I insist on spending all evening and even during her nap cleaning and getting prepped for a play date that will only result in toys and food everywhere? I guess it’s because I really do have a feeling of satisfaction when it’s over. The feeling of knowing when they walk in they will think, wow her place smells great, or being comfortable putting their babies on my floor not worrying about them eating last nights dinner. Even though the women I am friends with are probably the least judgmental mum’s I have met, I still have this need to impress them.

So I am giving myself a challenge, the next play-date I host I will not go on a cleaning spree, I will not “bake” cookies or light a candle, and I will not pick up Aud’s toys all morning or make my bed. Do you think they will notice? Probably not…because the truth is the only one’s us mum’s need to worry about making an impression on is our kids and to be honest I think Aud would love it way better if I didn’t spend the time putting away her blocks only to have her have to find them and spill them out onto the floor for the 3rd time today thinking, ‘I wonder how many times she wants to play this game?”

Please, take my picture!

Its the holiday season. I consider Thanksgiving pretty much the start of the holiday season, that brings along the photo sessions together at the table, near the fire place, everybody in costumes, and so forth. I do try and stay away from the camera as I don't feel comfortable looking at myself these days. More often than not I hate myself on the photos I see. Plus, my kid and my relatives all look much better than me, so I just wait aside for all the snapping cameras to stop.

I am wrong doing that. I do have a few pictures of myself with Santino, but I somehow now I feel its not enough. He will want to see as much of me as possible when he grows up. He loves me as I am, loves my tummy, my hands, my smile, and never pays attention to my make up or hair.

I spend my life trying to make my son's life happier, better and fuller. I don't really have much energy left for myself, so should I be left out and always be on the background? The answer is NO! I want to be there as much as possible, be in the picture, in the life and in the memories.

This article here really made me change my attitude towards picture taking as a mom with a child. Well, first it made me cry, and then I changed my attitude. Such a great article, so true, so down to earth simple and ingeniously positive. I tagged this post under "easy tips for beautiful moms" because it is so easy and so simple: we all are already beautiful as we are! So let's just be in that picture.

Guest blogger, Nellie Johnson: Stages of Childbirth

Since many of our Goober Gang moms are expecting now their second babies and with the due dates approaching fast, I think this article from our new guest blogger, Nellie Johnson of Laborade.com, would be an interesting read.

Nellie Johnson is a registered nurse and certified Lamaze educator. Her work is based in organic practices that help mothers and mothers-to-be gather the knowledge that they need to trust their own intuition and do what they believe is the best for the physical and emotional health of themselves and their families.

If you have questions for Nellie, just email her at: nellie [at] laborade [dot] com.

It looks complicated at first glance: 4 rows, 4 columns, ranges, pie charts, new terminology.  However, focus your eyes on the far right column with the pictures of the little pregnant lady faces.  Those four images sum up birth.

1st Face: “I’m having a baby!”  Contractions have begun but are not painful or frequent enough to get in the way of life.  You go for  a walk, bake a birthday cake and call your mom.

2nd Face: “Let’s do this.”  With contractions getting longer, stronger and closer together you get more serious and instinctually activate your plans for baby’s arrival.

3rd Face: “Oh sh*t, I forgot this was going to hurt.”  This brief phase is intense with lots of contractions and few breaks.  Feeling helpless is common and support people are key.

4th Face: “I need to push!”  You can’t deny this feeling and find a new sense of determination, strength and relief.

Ta-da!  Cute little baby on your chest.
If you find more comfort in knowing the numbers and terminology around , explore the rest of the picture.  You’ll discover that that 1st Face represents “Early Labor”, that Stage 2 starts when the cervix is 10cm, and every other detail about the phases and stages of labor.

5 Minutes of Beauty in 5 Easy Steps! You're Worth It!

As I’ve mentioned before I really love beauty. I love doing my hair, and makeup, especially if I’m going somewhere which may require a little beautification. But these days with taking care of baby girl, time is not on my side. I needed to figure out a way to look and feel good about myself when leaving the house with a total of about 5-7 minutes of prep time! (the amount of time I could keep Aud busy in her crib with a book or stuffed animal). I think I’ve mastered it so I thought I would share with you how I do it!

- Wash, tone and apply moisturizer. This step alone will leave you looking totally fresh faced! Make sure you are using the proper products to go with your skin type, if you have oily skin, don’t use products meant for dry skin!!

- Concealer- just to hide those unwanted blemishes, sun spots, or redness. While I was pregnant I got what they call the “pregnancy mask” and it is more noticeable when I get some sun on my face. And I really find applying concealer with a brush is better than my fingertips and you’re not transferring any oil or bacteria from finger to face.

- A little blush or bronzer goes a long way! Be careful of how much you use and apply on staple areas ie. Cheekbones, forehead, nose, chin.

- Mascara!! Ok if you are not a makeup person and can go without the above steps, trust me when I say Mascara really does a body good especially for a busy mum! For the sleepless nights and busy mornings when you just have to get out the door, take the few seconds and put on some mascara! It will really help with your “I was up all night with a cranky, teething baby who refuses to sleep anywhere but in my arms so I don’t care if I have two different shoes on” look (but I can’t promise it will help with the feeling).

- Lipgloss/chap. Whether it’s the bottom on the purse chapstick or havn’t worn this is 3 months lipgloss, put it on and pucker up!
Ok one more little tip for the eyes- applying white eyeliner to the inside of your lids will really help with the above mentioned look! Trust me.

And if you have a minute to spare, throw your hair in low or high bun, side braid, or high pony. If not, at least give it a brush through and you can always use that Dry Shampoo or baby powder trick I told you about before!!

FYI's:
The products shown in the picture are what I use on a daily basis. I invested in the Bare Minerals starter kit and I love it, it works well as a concealer as well as an all over cover up. The kit comes with a bronzer and a setting powder as well but I tend to use those more for a "special" occasion. You can pick one up at
Sephora.

The Bourjois bronzer I use is great too and I don't find it has an orange tinge like most out there. Also found at Sephora or some Shopper's Drug Mart Boutiques.

The C.O. Bigelow Rose Salve I actually use as my lip gloss. It smell's great, and it leaves your lips with a nice sheer, translucent look. Also at Sephora but I have also seen it for cheaper at Bath and Body Works.

Simple Solution to the Day Old Mom Hair

Do you wake up in the mornings and say to yourself, “Today’s the day I am going to have a shower, shave my legs, and maybe even wash my hair!’ Well we’ve all been there as moms. Before having a baby I didn’t realize these are just some of the simple luxuries after baby! If you’re anything like me, I try to squeeze in a little me-time during babies morning nap, along with having breakfast, cleaning the kitchen, sorting the laundry, making the bed, and anything else I can get done on my to-do list. I thought I would share a little insight into the different ways I try to keep up with myself and my appearance even if I’m going to be home all day. Let’s face it, some days it’s just nice to feel a little more put together then the usual sweats, t-shirt and hair in a messy bun, you know, the mom look.
One thing I swear by and is worth the small investment is dry shampoo. For the days I limit my shower time to 5 minutes and have to choose between washing my hair and shaving my legs, this is one product I can count on! Dry shampoo is a way to refresh your hair without having to wash and dry it if you had to skip a day. Simply spray the powder on your hair and it absorbs the oils on your hair and scalp, then brush it out. The one I use is by Beyond the Zone and it’s called ‘Rock On, Dry Shampoo,’ I picked up at Sally Beauty Supply for about $8.
If you’re looking for a more ‘economical’ quick fix that you probably have in your house now, baby powder also does the trick. I find it tends to work better with blonde hair but it can work with brunettes as well, you just have to be a bit more careful with how much you apply.  Just shake a bit on the roots and brush it out with a soft bristle brush, and voila! Your 3 day old hair now looks totally refreshed and even adds a bit of volume to the roots for the just style dried hair look. So give it a try and let me know what you think of this tip!

Just an FYI, Sally Beauty Supply is a great place to find beauty products that salons may carry but at a lower price. They have everything from O.P.I. nail polish to salon brand hair dye.

Sally Beauty Supply Locations:
Aurora- Nearest intersection is Wellington St. And Leslie St. (in the Wal-Mart Plaza)
Richmond Hill- Nearest intersection is Leslie St. and Elgin Mills (In the Home Depot Plaza)
