The importance of art in child development

A series of articles by our guest blogger, Janine Georgiou-Z about the importance of art and creative development in babies, toddlers and children. She will also add some ideas to do art with your toddler at home.

30 Things to do this winter

I love the lists of important stuff to do with your kids during every season. I found many kinds online and decided it would be fun to make our own! So together with Connie we compiled a fun list of activities to do this winter. Technically, the winter just begun a few days ago, so here it comes!

Guest blog: Healthline.com. Choosing the diet that is right for you

Looking for the ideal diet? There is actually no "right answer" for everyone, and dieting has to be a very personalized matter. What works for the woman next door may not work for you and this is especially true where any dieting and weight loss are the focus.

5 minutes of beauty in 5 easy steps

I needed to figure out a way to look and feel good about myself when leaving the house with a total of about 5-7 minutes of prep time! (the amount of time I could keep Aud busy in her crib with a book or stuffed animal). I think I’ve mastered it so I thought I would share with you how I do it!

Sensory fun at home! Easy, fun, great activity for a toddler.

Santino's sensorial activities have been mostly tactile these days, with a few occasional auditory, visual, and thermic. I haven't been documenting much of these other experiments, but he has learned to discriminate by size, length, weight, loudness, color, even edibility.

Simple art project for a 2 year old. A present for nonna

Santino loves painting, holding a paint brush and mixing the colors. Well, for now he mixes all the colors together, until they turn brown, and then he paints careful stripes here and there, swooshes, calling them dinosaurs and fire trucks.

I wanted to channel his love for painting and help him make a present for nonna Lucy for her birthday.

I got a painters tape, using it to mask the picture. I taped a few strips in the middle of a water color paper sheet. I then drew a flower over the tape with a pencil. Then, using a sharp x-acto knife, i cut off the tape, leaving only the shape. It is possible to do, just need to be careful and don't rush.

Then I mixed up some water colors for Santino. To avoid him mixing up all colors into one brown, I gave him colors one by one, blue, then yellow, then red. The colors mixed beautifully on the paper.

Then I let the picture dry, and carefully removed the tape. It stuck a bit too much to the paper, but I removed it slowly. Next time I would have to use a real masking tape. After the tape was removed, the white flower shape was revealed. Looked very warm and tender.

I signed it "2012, From Santino, To Nonna Lucy" and put it inside a simple frame. Nonna liked her present.

GOOBER GANG ADOPTS A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS

Hey Gang

I thought it would be a nice gesture as an organization this year to try and adopt a family for Christmas. It's something our family tries to do each year but in these economic times and being a single income family (like many of us!) I know it can get difficult to commit to something like this on your own... So I thought doing it as an organization this year would be a great option for all of us to contribute how we can :)

Many of you may have heard, seen or even known a family who has been assisted by The Yellow Brick House Organization. One of their homes is actually right here in Aurora!! I've personally known moms and went to school with kids who were helped in times of need from this organization and coincidentally our friend, Amber Gordon-Bunn, from Goober Gang works there as a Fundraising Coordinator. So what a better organization to pick ~ helping women and children being affected by abuse!!...

How Can You Help?

The answer in short is IN ANY WAY YOU CAN! Below are the details of "our family" that we are loosely sponsoring as a guideline. Those who would like to donate monetary gifts, gift cards or the items specified below can do so.

Furthermore, there are TONS of other families with a wide arrangement of needs, including the organization itself which is always looking for supplies for use in the homes. So basically anything new / unused goes! Here are some ideas.....

• toiletries for mom and baby (samples are great! i.e. mini shampoos, soaps, razors, toothpaste, floss etc.)
• unused ladies and children's clothing, shoes, purses, scarves, hats, mitts etc.
• toys, art supplies, colouring books, books, learning toys / items
• chocolates, candies, "stocking stuffers", nick nack toys
• non-perishable food items
• cosmetic products (we all have so many hand soaps, perfumes, creams and such!)
• diapers & diapering products (..have unused ones that your kids grew out of? Loose unused diapers are ok...)
• unused Christmas decorations, good condition gift wrap / bags / ribbon /wrapping supplies etc.

...and more! the list goes on.. If you are not sure on an item, just ask!

How To Submit Your Items?

Drop Off: to Connie's house ~ 58 Ross Patrick Cres Newmarket *at your convenience. A bin on my porch will remain available.. Just call or email me when you'll be dropping off so I can look out for the items or arrange to be home (connie@connieberenguer.com 416.885.9709). You can put your name on the items if you like.....

Email: you can send an email money transfer (EMT) to my personal email address connie@connieberenguer.com and I will cut a chq to the organization as a whole from all the EMT's I get

Mail: you can mail your chq's or gift cards to me at:

Tip: to avoid night time flooding

In our Goober Gang group, we already discussed this issue, exchanging tips on how to prevent night time flooding, as babies and toddlers often sleep through the night on their tummies.

I suggested double diapering for the night, which works great. Recently, though, I noticed that double or not, Santino still often wakes up wet. And, its not because the diaper was so full, rather the diapers got pulled down over the night, and the pee escaped from the top. This issue does not depend on the size, make and style of the diaper. I tried various kinds and styles.

It seems, that I found a solution: I put the diaper backwards. It goes up his tummy and stays there, while the front part stays in place on his bum.

P.S. I hear, its something that other moms practice as well, but I wanted to share this tip anyways. Works magic!

Birthday party for a 2 year old. Fire truck theme.

It's been a challenge for me, but I think I did it. I had a few ideas on what to do for Santino's 2nd birthday party, I followed through on most of them. Here's what I did.

I knew I wanted to do a small playdate-like party for Santino, just with a few of his friends. I wanted to make it a theme party, just for fun and also to give me a better direction for my ideas. I am a kind of person who can't just create something something. I need a theme, a direction, some kind of constraint. Then it becomes easier somehow, just because so many options that otherwise overwhelm me, get cut off and I can stay on track.

A few months ago I thought I would do a Bob-the-Builder theme, but Santino's recent new obsession with fire trucks gave me a new direction.

To make a theme birthday party for a 2 year old, you don't need much. Here's the checklist:

1. Invitations
2. Snacks
3. Entertainment
4. Cake
5. Favors

And that pretty much covers the basics. You can also add decorations here, but I didn't go as far as purchasing fire truck balloons or banner flags, and decided to keep it simple.

So here is a play-by-play of my planning and executing.

Invitations

I opted for a simple and free invitations, so I used email to send them out. I made a digital photo, wrote an invite and gave it a little design in photoshop. And here it is, my own fire truck theme invite!

I specified the date, the time and the length (I made it early morning, more suitable for toddlers), and I also mentioned that second hand gifts are welcome: we welcome the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle idea in our house. Plus, I realize that all these toddlers' moms are stay-at-home, the incomes are limited, and I didn't want to obligate them to buy expensive gifts. Santino doesn't care if its new. He will appreciate any truck or a book about trucks, and that's what I said on the invite.

Snacks

I didn't want to have a bunch of unmanageable toddlers high on sugar running around and bumping in each other, plus I don't promote sugar snacks in our home, so I arranged various fruit slices on pretty plates on a small table. I added toddlers' favorite fish crackers and home made mini carrot cakes. My original idea of "design your own topping" didn't come to life due to various reasons, but toddlers were happy with just the bite size cupcakes. I put lots of carrots, also added butternut squash, nuts and raisins, and put only half the sugar as it is required by the recipe.

Entertainment

I did think of a few fire-truck-themed games, but they all involved water, so required being outside. I realized that would have been too much of a mess, and decided to keep it simple, just playing downstairs in Santino's toy room. It was not that well organized, but toddlers didn't care. Whatever toys they had to play with, they spread all over the room, making such a mess, that I thought I would never be able to clean it. It did take me a few days after the party to finally sort everything through properly.

I turned on some nursery rhymes music, hoping they would dance and sing, but they were too busy. One mom said, in reply to my concern that I didn't have any special games for them, "them just playing like that is fine; I actually wish this how it would be the whole time". And she was right about that.

I had purchased 3 "tunnels" for the kids on a garage sale. They loved playing with those.

I prepared some puzzles and some stacking toys, but they were not in demand. Morning party for the 2 year olds was filled with more active games.

A few nights before, I put together a playlist of fire truck videos and had it playing continuously in another room. I figured, that at some point the kids will get tired of each other, and some will want to calm down and would love to watch some videos. Santino can watch fire trucks on TV for hours, so it was more interesting for him, that for other kids.

I also painted a fire truck mock up with a cut out for the kids to stick their face in and take pictures. We kinda skipped this, not everybody was ready to play with this cut out the way I thought they would. Santino loved it though.

Cake

An hour after the start of the party, we brought the cake, made by Connie of the Perfectly Planned Parties.

I looked great, complimenting the fire truck theme, and the simple vanilla taste pleased the kids. Everybody loved the cake.

Santino loved the fire truck, that came with it, but didn't like the happy birthday song, started crying for some reason.

Party favors.

This project was a mind twister for me. I didn't know what to give the kids as a "thank you" for coming. Buying fire trucks for everybody seemed too expensive. I got the stickers, which is a great bribing tool at this age. And what else? I finally came up with an idea: fire truck cookies!

I didn't think it would be too hard to bake such cookies, but the decoration part was going to be a tricky one.

I found a cookie-cutter recipe online. This one. It worked great for me, who was baking such cookies for the first time! I'm sure it will work great for everybody.

I didn't have the fire truck cookie cutters, so I made one. I drew a simple shape on a card stock, cut it out, and used to trace on the dough! So simple. I found, that this will work great only on the almost frozen dough. If you start cutting soft dough, the edges will be very rugged, not clean.

For decoration, I mixed up some icing sugar (just regular sugar, blended in a small blender, the "Baby Bullet" one; if you don't have Baby Bullet, you can use coffee grinder) with water and some red and yellow icing food coloring. That made the red color of the cookies. To paint the details, I made some merengue icing, and then I just popped the cookies in a warm (not hot) oven for about half an hour, to harden the icing. The oven shouldn't be too hot, as the whites can change the color to brown, and you wouldn't want the cookies to become too hard.

For the "thank you" cards, I decided to give Santino an opportunity to participate in making this project. I mixed up some red food coloring with water and added sugar to thicken the mixture, and gave it to Santino. I also cut out a fire truck shape in a potato, in an attempt to make a stamp. The stamp would have worked, if he didn't start slamming that stamp on the cards so hard, that the shape disappeared quickly. Here's what we achieved as a "thank you" card, signed by Santino.

So, here is a little report on Santino's 2nd birthday party. I already wrote it once, and it got erased by Santino himself. It took me a while to find the time to sit down and write it all over again.

I enjoyed preparing this party for Santino! I wish I knew what I was doing better, but I will try again the next year! After all, there are many more Santino's birthday parties to come!

Right on Schedule

Freud was right about one thing, toddlers are anal control freaks! Well mine is anyway. Shortly after Liam turned two, it seems as though everything has become a battle of wills. I feel like I spend most of my time bargaining with a toddler! So I came up with a solution...

I made some activity cards on the computer, had them laminated and stuck magnets on the back. Each day I am going to put together our picture schedule to follow.

Our Day: Eat Breakfast, Get Dressed, Brush Teeth, Go in the Car, Go see friends, Nap Time, Wash Hands, Eat Lunch, Go to Library, Snack, Dust, Tidy Up, TV Time, Eat Dinner, Bath Time, Play Time, Pajamas, Brush Teeth, Read Books, Bed Time

When I introduced this to Liam, he absolutely loved it! He was so excited to have a visual plan of our day. He even showed his dad what we were going to do tomorrow. I'm really hoping this new visual schedule will make my life a little easier, after all, he can't talk back to the fridge.

I incorporated some simple chore activities that he can help me with, such as sweep floors and tidy up. I am also planning on leaving some blank spaces where Liam can chose from a few activities. Once each activity is completed, I will ask Liam to remove it from the schedule so he can easily see where we are at at any time.

Other Activity Cards: Go see Family, Go to Doctors, Music Time, Go to Play Group, Go to the Farm, Fold Clothes, Go to Grocery Store, Craft Time, DVD Time, Go to the Store, Play Time, Sweep Floors, Go to the Park, Go to the Mall, Snack, Go for a Walk.

I used magnets because I had lots of space on my fridge, but this can easily be done with velcro and bristol board.

Little tip for easier cooking

So this is my new "don't cook without it" tool: sieve!

Before I would either collect all the vegetable clippings in a bowl, or collect them in a plate, and dump them in my little compost bin every few minutes. Which is not hard, just time consuming, annoying and requires lots of bending and wiping the counter. For some time I just used the sink, then I would have to again scoop out all the cuttings by hand.

And then I suddenly came up with this idea! It is probably not much of a revelation to most of you, but if you are like me, and always looking to save time and energy, consider putting the sieve in the sink! You can peel your veggies into it, leaving the peels in the sieve until you are done prepping, simply washing the veggies or your hands over the sieve. See, its better than a bowl, that collects water, and better than just using a sink with a little mesh in the drain, because its easier to clean.

Now my cooking time is several minutes shorter, and 10 times less bending, that's for sure!

Play date ideas

One of the most important socializing activities of my toddler son, are play dates. I look for the opportunities to get together with other kids, as I want Santino to develop social skills and have fun while doing it. We have attended such amazing Goober Gang play dates with the themes like "salad bar", or "pool party" (its from the recent ones that I attended; other play date ideas, although not mentioned here, were also amazing). We also often meet up local non-Goober kids with their moms for the walks and for playing inside. Santino loves his friends, remembers their names, and often talks about them... Well, he doesn't really talk in paragraphs yet, but he likes to mumble jibberish, pretending he is telling a story, popping in there some familiar words, like "fire truck" or names of his friends.

I often find, that without structure or a theme, a playdate can become rather boring; if not for the kids, but for their moms for sure. I noticed, once kids start enjoying an activity and having fun, moms usually get really involved and become very proud and excited, too.

So for the next play date, consider one of these ideas below. And if these ideas give you a push for another idea, that's even better! If some of these activities look kinda messy, or noisy for a big group of kids, consider more intimate play date, with 2 or 3 kids. At 2 or 3 years of age, when kids become more independent  and possessive sometimes, its better for everybody, when the playdate is kept to smaller kids numbers.

Snacks

One of the awesome ideas I found recently, was to have a muffin tin, filled with various snacks, like cheese cubes and veggie or fruit slices available for the kids to munch on while they play. I find nothing unites them better, then fishing for the fish crackers.

I noticed, that the best time for the snacks to come out is about 20-30 mins after the start. This is when the first excitement is gone and they are looking for more stuff to do.

I tried the muffin tin today when 2 other kids came visiting Santino. This worked awesome! I put various snacks, like veggies and fruits, as well as fish crackers, and they all munched on their favorite snacks, which, surprise surprise!,  was different for each kid.

As for the activities, the first one I suggest to try, actually concerns snacks. The all-time favorite PIZZA! Well, in this case, is a make-your-own pizza. Provide the kids with the flat bread (in our family we enjoy naan bread for this purpose), sauce, cheese, pieces of veggies, some odd things, like fish crackers or cheerios! Have an adult put the pizzas in the oven and enjoy it together at a table or on a blanket on a grass, picnic style.

Activities.

You don't have to wait for the play date to enjoy these activities. It's something fun to do at home any time.

1. Making your own music instruments out of card board boxes, rubber bands, tins, and other similar stuff. The point is not to have a real drum or a real guitar, the point is to spend time with the kids making it, then playing it! If hosting a playdate with this idea, have lots of boxes, paper towel insides, rubber bands ready. Maybe spread the word before the playdate, and have visiting moms bring whatever you are missing.

Now, after the instruments are made, kids can go crazy, playing them all!

2. Target shooting!  I found this awesome idea of how to build a flipping target here: http://almostunschoolers.blogspot.ca/2010/12/cardboard-box-nerf-target.html

Basically, using old cardboard box, make a shooting target, and then shoot using Nerf guns, or in the toddler case - throw little balls or balloons. Its hard to throw a balloon, but its possible. I found recently, if the balloon is not blown up to its full "potential", it can be thrown and it follows the trajectory. Much safer choice for young kids.

3. Another awesome card box idea. Making frames out of card box: http://pintalaluna.blogspot.com/2012/02/marcos-de-carton.html, then filling them up with art. Great idea for the outside art project.

4. Dinosaur digging: http://www.teachpreschool.org/2011/03/digging-up-dinosaurs-in-preschool/

This could also be a great idea for the outside, or, if you are brave enough, or able to cover the floor well, then definitely do this at home. Kids love dinosaurs, love digging, and finding little treasures hidden in the sand, is such a thrill!

5. One of my favorite games when I was little, was "playing post cards". Me and my friends would take old post cards, cut them up in 4 pieces, mix them up, and try finding matching pieces. A great easy and inexpensive idea for matching activities. If puzzles are too early for your kid, try this idea. You can use any pictures, mount them on a card board for durability, then cut up in squares, or other shapes, and here is your toddler puzzle! If the pictures show something the kids are interested in (like a fire truck in our case... surprise, surprise!), then it sure will be a hit!

6. Hit a balloon with a paddle game! Hang balloon/balloons off the ceiling, give your toddlers paddles, or help them make their own, and let the game begin! If you have several active toddlers having fun hitting the balloons, consider giving them long balloons instead. Just an idea.

Santino loved this idea, but I made a mistake first, and hung the balloon too low. He was able to reach and grab the balloon, so he pulled it down immediately, ripping it off the thread. I moved the balloon a little bit higher, and he had a blast, trying to reach it, knocking it off with the little plastic balls and other balloons. The paddle wasn't a hit with him at this time. I am sure soon he will be more coordinated and will have more interest in holding a paddle.

Here is the source: http://blogs.babble.com/toddler-times/2011/08/02/loads-of-toddler-fun-with-a-simple-balloon/#so-she-could-hit-it

7. Bring your walkers/scooters and tricycles, some chalk and have a blast making a road and driving on it. It doesn't need to be as elaborate as driving to a store or a library, but its a chance to use the scooters, so anything else is a cherry on top!

http://innerchildfun.com/2012/05/have-you-been-to-trunki-town.html

There are so many ideas! Once I saw, what people are inventing on the spot, and how beneficial this is for the kids, I became very excited. I stopped being stressed that I don't know what to do with my son, I stopped thinking I should get him more toys, and I realized, that the best activities are often free or cost something next to nothing.

In order to keep this post not-too-long, I decided not to collect an even number of ideas, like 10 or 15. When we explore more ideas, I will post them too!

DIY Canvas Photos

I know I said I'm not very crafty, but I saw this on Pinterest and I just had to try it!

So you know those really cool canvas photos you can buy that are really nice but also really expensive? Want to make them yourself?

Here's what you need:

- Paint Canvases from the dollar store ($1 to $2 each)
- Double sided tape
- Pictures
- Scissors

Before: I had these photos in cheap frames from Walmart. I felt like the frames really took away from the pictures, and they were plastic so they  don't hang well and kept falling off the wall.

Here's what to do:

- Tape the picture to the paint canvas
- Trim the edges with scissors

See what I mean .. too easy to resist!

After:  Now I love how these look on my wall, the canvas 'frames' really make the pictures pop. I think next time I will do this with 8x10pictures.

*You can also paint the sides of the canvas black

I can't wait to do this again!!
